Botox vs. Dysport: Which One is Right for You?

What’s the difference between Botox and Dysport? Both are effective treatments for reducing wrinkles and achieving smoother skin, but understanding their unique features can help you decide which option is right.

Dysport and Botox effectively reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially those caused by repeated facial expressions. They can help with frown lines, crow’s feet, brow furrows, bunny lines, gummy smiles, large masseters, and bumpy chins. So, what sets them apart?

Botox vs. Dysport: Key Differences

  1. BOTOX® Cosmetic has been the leading brand for botulinum toxin injections for decades.
  2. Dysport ®, a newer option, offers similar wrinkle-reducing effects that typically appear faster.

While Botox results may take about a week to show, but Dysport results often become visible within a few days. The main active ingredient in both products is the same, but Dysport uses a different protein that allows it to spread more and kick in faster. Different manufacturers lead to variations in formulations, dosages, and costs. Despite these differences, the overall treatment cost of Dysport is equal to Botox.   Both treatments share similar side effects and risks, including temporary swelling, redness, slight pain, and bruising, which usually resolve within a few days.

Ultimately, Botox and Dysport are excellent options for treating wrinkles and fine lines. They last approximately four months, contain the same primary active ingredient, and provide safe, noninvasive treatment methods.

When to Choose Botox or Dysport

BOTOX® Cosmetic is FDA-approved to treat horizontal forehead lines, glabellar lines, and crow’s feet around the eyes. It’s also approved for conditions like hyperhidrosis, chronic migraines, and cervical dystonia.

Dysport ® is FDA-approved for facial wrinkles and some therapeutic uses, including limb spasticity.

Since Botox doesn’t diffuse as much as Dysport, it may be slightly better for small treatment areas like crow’s feet. Dysport, which diffuses more, might be a better choice for larger areas like forehead lines. However, both brands work well for most treatment areas.

Most patients don’t need to switch between Botox and Dysport—they’re very similar products. You can stick with the brand that has been working for you. If one brand isn’tgiving you the desired results, consider trying the other.

Where to Get Your Botox or Dysport Treatment

If you’re new to botulinum toxin treatments, it’s crucial to choose an experienced and highly trained injector before committing to a brand. Experience is far more important than the brand used. An experienced provider can also recommend the best option for your specific goals.
